Renewed 3070 was in awful condition
The 3070 is a great series of cards when it comes to specs–I loaded up and played Deadwatch, ran 3DMark, Blender Rendering, and the Dead Space remake (On Ultra!). The card is a major improvement to the GTX 1060 I was using before when it comes to performance–I can even use VRChat without lagging out and disconnecting now! Unfortunately, I had to give a 1 star review due to the fact that the card came heavily worn, damaged, and dirty. This was very much not what Amazon Renewed is touted to be on the product page.
With the rising prices of GPUs and the potential for them to rise further in the near future, I decided to take a look into Amazon renewed to save money. It seemed safer than buying used, as someone professionally has cleaned and looked at it. What wasn’t to like? $380 didn’t seem like a bad price for a card that “works and looks like new.” according to the Item Description and the Amazon Renewed guarantee.
Unfortunately, this was far from the case. The card does not look new (Or even fair-condition), and does not work like new either.
If you take a look at the text, it reads:
“A Renewed supplier who is Amazon-qualified performs a full diagnostic test, replaces any defective parts, and thoroughly cleans the product. The product may have minimal scratches or dents. Box may be generic and accessories may not be original, but will be compatible and fully functional.” The supplier I purchased through was named “QyTech”.
The card has so many hours on it that it’s caked in dust (Look under the fan blades in a photo on my review), indicating that it was not cleaned, as the text says, before being sent to me. The card was not inspected, nor tested, clearly, as there are many defective parts on this card. This includes the rear teeth being bent, the fan having a broken outer ring, the bearings in the fan motors BOTH being completely shot so the fans clatter, grind, and wobble aggressively (and loudly) when the card is in-use. I’m also suspicious that it’s cooling as well as it should be with these fans, as they don’t seem to spin as freely as they should. See video attached to my review.
The fan clatters so loudly in the card that you can hear it in the office clear across the house. Again, look at the video. If you look at the photos of the card in the product listing, there should be Asus stickers on the fans. Did this thing overheat and unstick them in the past? You have to wonder if this is someone’s old Crypto mining card or heavily used gaming card–but still, it shouldn’t have this kind of damage just sitting in a PC being used. At any rate, this thing not only wasn’t renewed or refurbished, it wasn’t even looked at obviously.
This was renewed and sold by a third party company called “QyTech”. I contacted them to ask about a partial refund so I can fix the fans myself, or a full refund where I return it, but I’ve not heard anything yet. If I hear back, I’ll update the review with what happens. I’ll likely initiate a return under “Product has inaccurate description” if I don’t hear back soon.
What a disappointing experience. Buy renewed at your own risk.
