Light weight – great power – two batteries – one charger
This mower exceeded my expectations for power and performance. I previously had a Worx mower that was over 8 years old with the large battery. it was heavy but got the job done until battery finally failed and no replacement.
This B&D mower was a great replacement for my Worx. I took a hard look at another Worx, but their price to mower size just didn;t compare to this one on Amazon. The large blade and mower deck gets the job done. The single lever with multi height adjustment is awesome for getting the perfect mow height.
A few quirks to mention, but I would still say this is a great mower.
1. The plastic wheels squeak a little when I mow and turn. A little lubricant might solve that haven’t tried yet.
2. It only comes with a single charger and two batteries, so if you deplete both batteries, you have to charge one, then swap and charge the other. if you forget to swap you are short a battery for next mow.
3. Only one battery is active at a time. Not a big deal, but it isn’t that obvious from the pictures. The rear battery compartment is storage only, and you swap the front battery out when it is depleted and move the spare to the actual battery port on front. (This is good for me, as I currently get whole yard done on single battery. since it isn’t drawing from both batteries, I only need to charge one when done with mow)

Batteries make this nearly useless
Needing a new lawn mower at the start of COVID, I didn’t want to shop in person, so purchased this. The mower itself is lightweight (not surprising, since it’s mostly plastic) and maneuverable. Granted it has been over 2 years since I assembled it, but my recollection is that it was straightforward to put together.
Unfortunately, a major problem – and what brings my overall rating of this mower to just 1 star – is that the batteries don’t last long enough to do the job. My home sits on a quarter-acre lot with a house, shed, driveway, several trees and a garden. If the grass wasn’t overgrown, I could mow the yard in 45 minutes with my old corded mower. The description of this mower stated that just one of the two included batteries would last the amount of time I needed to complete cutting my yard’s grass. Unfortunately, this was never the case. The original two batteries combined have never lasted the 45 minutes that were promised for one battery. On top of that, only one charger was included, so only a single “round” of mowing could be done at a time. With a charging time of several hours, I often had to wait until the next day to resume mowing.
After a couple months of frustration with the above situation I purchased new batteries and a second charger. When I made the purchase, I stuck with Black & Decker batteries. I verified that the voltage, amps, etc. were the same. The batteries also looked identical in the pictures I could see. Unfortunately, when the batteries arrived they were obviously not right for my mower, as the connectors were wrong.
Last year I purchased another replacement battery and charger. This battery was stated to have twice the capacity (amp-hours) as the originals. Unfortunately, it also fails to last anywhere close to the 45 minutes (let alone the 90 minutes one would expect) I need to get the job done. At least I can get in two “rounds” of mowing now.
Another frustration is that if the grass is overgrown and thick, the mower stalls quite easily. With the battery situation being what it is, this often happens as I need several days to mow my yard. The method I’ve adopted when dealing with this is to “pop a wheelie” with the mower: Where there is a small patch like this I will just lower the mower onto the patch. Where there is an extended stretch of such grass I mow over it multiple times in order to get it to the desired height. This can extend the time needed to cut the grass quite a lot.
When I was younger it seemed that Black & Decker had a pretty good reputation. Unfortunately, this experience, a few others, and some things I’ve seen & heard from other sources, leads me to conclude that they no longer deserve that reputation. I certainly won’t be buying any more of their battery operated tools in the future.
Update: At only three years old the starting mechanism failed. I tried to fix it myself, but found that beyond my skill. With the problems mentioned above, I wasn’t willing to put more money into having it repaired and bought a replacement from another manufacturer.

All the features I loved in the old one, with all the improvements I wanted.
I had an earlier model of this mower, which is why I purchased this one. After years of continuous use, it finally got to be time to replace. And I’m glad I did. The new one is lighter and easier to handle, but seems no less powerful, easily handling my lawn. Height adjustment is by a lever in easy reach and the height of the handlebar is also easy and precise to adjust.
Not sure about the proprietary battery, but it seems to have lots of power, and on-board storage for the spare is a great idea. Also, there’s now a “power remaining” indicator, which the old mover lacked.
I’ve used it once, and already I love it.
Edit: The battery life is not as great as in the older model. Fortunately, they included an extra battery which more than enough for my modest surburban lawn. I notice that Amazon offers third-party batteries for this unit, which have a higher Amp-hour rating; I intent to get at least one of those just to be sure. Being a photographer, I’m well aware that many battery manufacturers offer high-guality replacement batteries for cameras, so I’m pretty confident in such batteries. If you have a large lawn, I would suggest getting one or more additional batteries to be sure you always have enough.

2 Years on and it’s gone to the great recycler in the sky.
PROS – I love the lightweight and maneuverability. Does a good job on the edges, leaving little that needs to be trimmed.
CONS – Given that my backyard lawn is about 4000sqf, the batteries don’t last as long as I would think they should. The first cutting used a full battery and 2 indicator lines on the second. Second cutting, 1 full battery and 1 indicator line. Third cutting managed with just one battery.
Charger takes about 4-5 hours to recharge the batteries.
If I had grass in the front yard, I would be returning the mower, as it would not have the battery capacity to do the whole yard in one day. But it works for me, so the cons don’t outweigh the pros.
Update after 10 weeks of use:
The cons now outweigh the pros, mower stalls out at the site of long grass. I missed one cutting and had to raise the cutting height 2 settings just to be able to get mower to run without stalling. Then had to cut it again the next day.
Want to fix the charger problem, that’ll only cost you another $86.82 for the fast charger. Not sure if you can put hot batteries in that charger
This is the first Black and Decker product I bought in 40 years, I now remember why. They are built for the occasional home handyman.
Certainly glad I bought it at half price.

Had it about a month or so. Iâm impressed with this mower and battery life. Two batteries let me mow our front yard, the neighbours front and our back….with one bar remaining on the second battery. And really, one could spring for a third battery if your yard is larger. Today I mowed the back which had gotten away from me in places and the motor didnât even notice the thicker spots.
I do keep a higher height setting as I prefer longer blade length. The unit is reasonably maneuverable but I find myself being a bit more cautious because it is mainly plastic decking. Very light though which is nice and helpful when mowing near flower beds, etc.
The folding handle is a bit awkward but I donât really need to use it. If I did, I would get the hang of it I sure.
So far, I happy with this mower.

This lawn mower has a lot going for it. Fast and free shipping were a plus. Easy to maneuver. Easier to use than I thought after reading the instructions. It took several tries to get the gears on the handle height to mesh properly, and I wonder how long they and the lock will last as they are just plastic and seemed to strain to work. One charged battery did half my yard (about 30 min). The battery took hours to charge. And, you can not immediately recharge an used battery…too hot so the charger does not work. That was very disappointing. Black and Decker needs to get a better battery and charging system. My SnowJoe snow blower runs on 40v battery and can run through deep snow for an hour and takes a short time to recharge. Had a very hard time opening up the spare battery storage area. Had to use a screw driver to force it open. Again, plastic so not very durable if it does not open easily. Quiet running so can get mowing earlier in the am and not disturb the neighbours. To fold it up for storage, you basically have to take the handle apart…..that’s a pain although its not that hard to do. Overall, it met my expectations and I love not having to fuss with oil and gas.
