Hits the sweet spot. A fine piece of kit with a superpower
Since a major power outage and food loss hit us last year, Iâve been working on off-grid solar backup solutions, and Iâve learned a lot. Iâve learned that the power stationâs capacity in watt hours is important for how long a power station will run things if not recharged, of course, but the most important thing I look at is the continuous and maximum (boost) wattages itâs capable of. Attempting to run devices and small appliances that exceed the continuous rating for more than a millisecond or two is a no-go, and so is thinking youâll run something at the upper end of the wattage capacity for very long without completely depleting the battery. A power station serves as a kind of mini combined charge controller/battery bank/inverter if you plan to run AC devices off of it. My two large Bluetti AC180s (devoted to keeping our refrigerator and upright freezer running 24/7) store 1152 wH each, and even with extra battery banks factored into the mix, they require grid power to recharge if itâs too cloudy outside for their 800-watt solar arrays. But even if we donât get through a whole day off-grid, Iâve been surprised to see our electricity usage drop and now try to run as much as I can off solar out of habit.
Anyway, battery capacity and solar input are everything. The 256 wH capacity of this C400 is decent storage/run time for lower wattage devices (e.g., phones, laptops), but the 40-watt solar panel that came with mine is really not muchâ¦although certainly better than nothing! Fortunately, this rugged, well-designed little workhorse can accept up to 150 watts from solar. It can also charge and discharge at the same time. It is very quiet!
I was offered UD(UltraDurable)POWERâs C200 for review but passed on it because I knew it would not handle some of the small appliances I might want to run off of it. The C400 is another matter. I can run my Dash Multiflex grill, a blender, a coffee grinder, and my 6-cup oldie-but-goodie Aroma rice maker from it without it erroring out. Of course, balancing the input/output is critical for maintaining constant power. Fortunately, running a blender for a minute or my grill for five is totally doable. The C400âs clear readout shows the wattage going out, the battery state of charge (SOC), and how many hours it will run at the current pulled wattage. Using the C400âs AC power supply, I can charge it by plugging it into one of my Bluetti AC180sâ AC outlets (which will accept a grounding prong), or I can send power to it via the AC180âs DC outlets or cigarette port. On sunny days when I donât have enough battery capacity to store the sunlight we get through our larger arrays, I can be keeping this one charged up and also carry it to other parts of the house to charge/run our wattage-compatible devices like our Vornado DC fans. Importantly, unlike our super-heavy Bluetti power stations, the C400 is highly portable.
The power station itself, all high-end cables with DC7909 connections that also fit my Bluettiâs ports, the power supply clearly marked âUDPOWERâ on the back with all specs, and the foldable solar panel all arrived well packaged in a small box. It has plenty of DC and USB ports for charging laptops and phones, and the two AC outlets are generous and solid for something this small. (Note: you cannot plug in anything with a grounding prong into them.) I love the placement of the lights in front and that they only take 2 to 4 watts to run. The well-written, detailed manual is a keeper, although there were a few confusing references to C500 in the âJump Starter (Only for C400)â section. I need to get a carrying bag for this power station that everything will fit inside so itâs ready for bugging out if needed. (Note: No storing this in the car; 32F-104F are the storage temp limits.)
This C400 from UDPOWER is ruggedly built, well designed, easy to carry and use, and leaves nothing up to guesswork. What sets it apart from all of our other power stations (and we have acquired quite a few) is its SUPERPOWER: You can jump-start a dead 12V car battery (8 cylinder 5.0L gas/4.0L diesel) with it! I havenât been able to test out this feature yet, because we donât have a dead battery (knock on wood), but the solid jumper cable that plugs snugly into an industrial-looking dedicated charging port on the back of the C400 gives me confidence that itâs going to work if we need it to.

Versatile portable power station, plus jump start feature
The UDPOWER portable power station comes with folding solar panel (40W), A/C power charger, cigarette plug charger and jumper cables. The unit measures about 8″ w x 7 1/4″ t x 5 1/8″ deep and weighs in at 6.5 lbs. The folding solar panel is about 9 1/2″ x 10″ and unfolds to 38 1/2″ x 10″. It does not have any “kickstands” to you must lean against something to angle it toward the sun or lay it flat (with less output) and weighs 2.04 lbs. The power station A/C output was 125.1 V and pure sine wave rated at 400w, with 800w surge capability. In addition to the A/C output, it has 1 USB-A (5V@3A, 9V@2A 18W max), 2 USB-C (5V@3A, 9V@3A, 12V@3A, 15V@3A, 20V@3.25A PPS3.3 21V@3A Total 100W (65W + 35W)), a cigarette plug outlet12-13.6V@10A MAX136W) and 1 DC 5521 (12-13.6V@10A Max 136). For input/charging the 1 USB-C PD65W max, DC input using the A/C charger, solar panel max 150W or car charger 120W max. All of which limited voltage range of 11-28V . The unit has a total capacity of 256W hours, though actual amount will vary.
Starting at 55% charge, charging the unit with the solar panel, bright partly cloudy 70 degree day showed a charge time of 3.6 hour based on 42W output of the folding solar panel. The panel did blow over once. After 4.5 hours it had only reached 88%.
The unit comes with everything you need to have a portable power station. It will not run large appliances, but will run lights, fans, TV, radio and other smaller devices or charge cell phone, tablets and other USB equipment. How long will it run them is dependent on your load. In theory a 10W LED light will run for about 25 hours. The more wattage used the less time it will power it.
I like the portability and features of this unit. Have jumper capability is a plus and a great idea. This is a good unit for camping, boating, needing portable A/C power or emergency power outages. With its pure sine wave output it is a good choice for sensitive electronics (like PC or other equipment). At the time of this review, Amazon has a $50 off coupon….
